What is Focus? How Does Focus Work? Focus is a medical practice for children and adults with ADHD and related problems. Dr. James Wiley started Focus so that he would have more time to devote to the diagnosis and treatment of these patients. Focus provides objective testing, medical treatment as well as behavior modification strategies. The evaluation begins before your first visit. Our staff will walk you through the process of getting the rating forms and assessments we need. At the first visit you will spend approximately an hour with the doctor so that he/she can take a careful history and perform a physical examination. Computer assisted testing will be done as well so the entire visit will last 1 to 2 hours. Before you leave the first visit, your doctor will review the findings, make a preliminary diagnosis and provide a treatment plan. The first visit is followed by a second appointment in two to three weeks. Email communication is encouraged in the time between the visits to access treatment success and to troubleshoot any problems before the second visit. On the second visit, testing will be to help assess treatment effectiveness and side effects. We follow patients very closely until we find the right dose of the right medication. During this time of dose optimization you will likely see the doctor monthly. Once the correct dose is found routine follow up visits are scheduled every three months to help minimize side effects and monitor for changes in effectiveness. Between visits, email communication is encouraged when there are problems so that your doctor can quickly help find a solution. Dr. Sheila Woods trained at the University of Kentucky and have been practicing primary care pediatrics for the past 30 years. Dr. Woods frustration level has gradually increased over the years trying to care for children with ADD/ADHD in a busy pediatric practice. She participated in a Mini-Fellowship with Columbia University Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and this helped tremendously with comfort levels; however the greatest impediment was adequate TIME to evaluate and treat children and adolescents with ADD/ADHD. Over the years, technology for a more precise diagnosis and very careful medication management has emerged. Dr. Woods utilizes the latest professional medical guidelines and is able to individualize care for each patient with adequate time for precise diagnosis and evidence-based management. Dr. Woods is committed to providing education and helpful resources to patients and their families living with ADHD. Her passion is providing OPTIMAL care; just the right amount of time and testing for the right diagnosis, just the right amount of follow up, just the right amount of medication, and just the right amount of reassurance.
