Dr. Landstrom’s philosophy to treatment is to “test first so there are no questions later!” This means the first step is to identify all the major factors contributing to the presenting problem, as well as to pinpoint any secondary sources of dysfunction that could be having an impact. Often, what seems to be one problem is really something else entirely. This diagnostic clarity is accomplished by administering a battery of tests personalized to the unique presentation of a client. We “cast a wide net” by making sure to evaluate all potential sources of the presenting problem, while also being judicious in tailoring the battery to relevant information (as opposed to having everyone complete every test). By identifying specific areas in need of intervention that may otherwise not have been considered, the rate of recovery increases and the treatment team can implement much more targeted interventions. The second step is to have a detailed feedback appointment where you are guided through which tests were given, why they were given and what the results mean. A wide range of treatment options can be discussed, including their pros and cons, which then allows the client and their family to make a much more informed decision regarding how to proceed. Ultimately, it is up to our clients and their families to decide what is right for them, and we consider it our mission to provide the information necessary to make those informed decisions.
