As a clinical psychologist with extensive experience working in schools and doing psychological and educational evaluations of children and adults, I know that attentional problems present in many ways. A one-size-fits-all treatment not only fails to respect the client’s individuality, it typically won’t work. Careful assessment and a flexible approach based on clear communication with all parties involved brings lasting changes and the experience of growing effectiveness; an appreciation of clients’ strengths and assets helps foster realistic hope. Attentional challenges have wide-ranging impacts–educational, familial, social, vocational, emotional–each of which may need to be addressed. Prioritizing goals and planning the treatment in a cooperative manner provides a first opportunity to address two key issues in living with ADHD. Modalities of treatment may range from formal assessment to individual coaching to family and/or couples therapy to observing and intervening in the homework process.
