I help clients (and their families) understand why clusters of symptoms may indicate an ADHD diagnosis, along with assesing for other/ additional symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma, substance misuse, addiction. I think it is important not only to evaluate but to share information and resources with clients about the differences and unique ways they have for learning, planning, remembering, organizing, etc…During coaching/ counseling I find exploring feelings of shame and invalidation is very important to help them move forward with hope their life can be more managable.
For many older adolescents and adults I have found a sense of relief that they were not lazy, stupid, irresponsible, spaced out or flawed as children. They are often eager to learn more about ADHD and explore modifications that work for them based on their temperament, values and lifestyle.
I’m seeing an increase in self-medication through cannabis to slow their brains down and stop “screwing up so much”. They are scared nothing else will work until they start learning more about ADHD as a disorder – one they can thrive with.
